Water use in salt production

Hi,

I am trying to source some data on the fresh water used (withdrawn and, if possible, consumed) during the production of table salt (mined and/or obtained from sea water). I wondered if anyone had any suggestions about where I am might be able to obtain such data as I wasn't able to find it on Ecoinvent? This is assuming that the processes involved in the production of salt use fresh water in some way which I am not altogether certain they do.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Ben

Dear Ben,

You can find in ecoinvent information about Sodium Chloride production. Accessing the database you can see that there is direct water use (exchanges: Water, unspecified natural origin and Water, cooling, unspecified natural origin) in both activities (sodium chloride production, brine solution and sodium chloride production, powder).

To consult what ecoinvent offers download the Activity overview file, excel file listing all activities and products in the database, from the documents and files section of the ecoinvent website. You can also consult version 2 report 8 chapter 74 Sodium Chloride (read here how to access version 2 reports) to know more about the original information used for Sodium Chloride datasets, keeping in mind that changes are made between the different versions of the database and therefore the information included in version 3 datasets are the most up-to-date. To check for changes between versions of the database consult the PDF documentation "Report of changes" in the documents and files section.
