We are looking for a passionate Data Analyst. The successful candidate will collect, analyze and interpret data. Turning data into information, information into insight and insight into business decisions. You will work with in-house collaborators, external partners and customers.
ecoinvent is the world's most consistent and transparent life cycle inventory (LCI) database used in environmental assessments such as carbon foot printing and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), as well as in Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and other methods. The database is an information source for sustainability experts, product designers, policy-makers, researchers and others. It is sold and used worldwide, with over 7500 licences provided to businesses, consultants, academics and public entities, and many tens of thousands of users. ecoinvent is a not-for-profit association with close ties to the ETH domain, with funding coming from license sales. With more than a dozen employees and located in central Zurich, ecoinvent offers a great work environment for someone looking to work on an innovative and meaningful challenge.
What the job involves
ecoinvent maintains and publishes a database on industrial and other processes and products. ecoinvent has significant and diverse needs for software, code and data handling toolkits and techniques. Tools and ad-hoc analyses need to be developed for internal users (ecoinvent’s employees) and for external collaborators (data providers, consultants, direct users and software developers). Your job will include handling, analysing and reviewing data internally, and to provide data to the users and customers in various forms. Your ability to understand the needs of the team and build tools that automate certain processes within the company will form part of your job. You will provide customized data solutions for key users and customers in collaboration with our team.

You will learn about sustainability assessments and LCA, and you will work on a complex database that aims to model the global interactions of processes, products and wastes with each other and the planet. You will have the opportunity to develop and hone your data science, data handling, transformation and software development or engineering skills. You will work closely with sustainability experts with data, coding and IT experience at ecoinvent as well as with external developers and implementation partners on a variety of projects. You will also contribute directly to the development of our software portfolio in internal projects. ecoinvent is a flexible organization and you will be able to shape your role with us. A 12-month period is envisaged for you to establish the necessary understanding of the database and its structure and become a valued contributor to activities and projects in the team. The position is then intended to continue on a permanent basis should you perform well, and demand persists.
What we expect from you
Qualifications and Experience
As an ideal candidate you have a university-level degree in computer science, software engineering, development or closely related field. You have 1 – 3 years of working experience in data analysis, data science or statistics. Proficiency in Python, R and related stacks, Excel spreadsheets and various data formats (CSV, XML, JSON) is a must. General purpose programming and scripting, databases (SQL, NoSQL), data visualization, reporting technologies and web software development are big pluses. Previous experience with environmental sciences, environmental projects and especially life cycle assessment is also beneficial but not a must. An excellent command of English (both written and oral) is a must. Fluency in German is a strong asset with other language skills being advantageous.
As an ideal candidate, you have a curious mindset, are pro-active, structured and organized. You can create innovative ideas and concepts and then follow through on them. You will be working with collaborators of very mixed backgrounds, so you have good interpersonal skills and a can-do attitude. Managing various, diverse tasks at the same time does not phase you. Finally, you enjoy working in a diverse and international team and are an interested learner and can pick up new concepts quickly.
