Data Engineer, Junior (100%)

Are you looking for an opportunity to build data software solutions that will have a positive impact on environmental sustainability?


As a data engineer at ecoinvent, you’ll enable the diagnosis of environmental challenges of our generation, with custom-made end-to-end solutions. You will work on various forms of data and collaborate closely with a team of life-cycle analysts of different scientific backgrounds. By leveraging your Python skills, you’ll broaden your IT competencies further into an exciting and ever-growing field of data analysis (data science).


What the job involves

ecoinvent has significant and diverse needs for data tools (applications), services and products for both internal and external end users, as well as third-party funded projects.


The abovementioned data tools, services and products software perform multiple functions including data collection, validation, cleaning, analysis, review, management, transformation and visualization. External collaborators, such as data providers, consultants, direct users and software developers, benefit from the same. Furthermore, your ability to understand the needs of the team and build tools that automate certain processes within the company will form part of your job.


Desired Skills and Experience

  • A university degree or similar in computer science, software engineering, development or closely related field  
  • Python is a must and good knowledge of Django or Flask is plus 
  • Data analysis, mining, munging
  • Good knowledge of Excel spreadsheets as well as various data formats (CSV, XML, JSON)
  • Good knowledge of JavaScript (React, Vue), HTML5 and CSS
  • Experience with and interest in visualising data (dashboards, reports and so on) using JavaScript, Python frameworks/libraries (like D3.js, matplotlib, bokeh)
  • Aware of current trends in JavaScript, Python frameworks/libraries and how to select one for a problem
  • Strong knowledge of Git (version control)
  • Knowledge of API design and implementation (REST and GraphQL)
  • Experience in SQL and NoSQL databases is a plus 
  • An excellent command of English (both written and oral) is a must.


Experience in environmental sciences, environmental projects and especially life cycle assessment is beneficial but not a must. Fluency in German is a strong asset. Other languages (human or programming) also add value.

You will be working with collaborators of very mixed backgrounds, so you have good interpersonal skills and a can-do attitude. Managing various, diverse tasks at the same time does not phase you. Finally, you enjoy working in a diverse and international team and you are an interested learner and can pick up new concepts quickly.
