Negative GWP for soybean production?

Written on: 10.07.2019#1

When looking at the UPR of agricultural production activities such as soybean production in Brazil, there is an uptake of CO2 from the biosphere, as expected. However, this uptake does not result in a negative score in any of the ILCD 2018 climate change categories. Shouldn't the process have a negative score, at least in the category "climate change, biogenic"? It is fixing atmospheric carbon, after all.

Hi Benjamin,

A single exchange plays a role in the total score of a process but not always the defining one. The total score is an aggregation of all exchanges. There are probably other exchanges that negate this carbon dioxide absorption from the plant.

This is not the case. The issue is with the characterization factors. For "Carbon dioxide, in air" all ILCD 2018 CFs are 0. I think they should not be.

Under the 'Files' section in ecoquery you can find the LCIA implementation and its respective documentation. It is a folder that describes the LCIA imlementation in our LCIA results, that we publish in ecoquery. You can find more information about ILCD in those documents. Among also others, we are applying this LCIA method. If you wish to challenge the core assumptions and/ or the methodology of the method you might consider communicating your concerns to the authors of the method itself.
