Differences between ecoinvent 2 & 3

In ecoinvent 2 there were datasets representing UCTE production mix of electricity. Why can't I find these datasets in ecoinvent 3 anymore?

Until the year 2009, the interchange of electricity between 24 countries of continental Europe was coordinated by the Union for the Coordination of the Transmission of Electricity (UCTE).

In 2009, UCTE has been substituted by the European network of transmission system operators for electricity (ENTSO-E). As a consequence, no UCTE electricity mix should be used any longer.

For more information see: https://www.entsoe.eu/about-entso-e/inside-entso-e/a-proud-history/ucte/Pages/default.aspx

In the guidelines for ecoinvent version 3 it states that it is not possible to have markets with overlapping geographies in the ecoinvent database. Therefore it is not possible to provide a market for electricity in Europe since there are markets for all the individual countries present in the database.

Since there is a strong demand from our users for these types of markets representing an average of several smaller markets we created a temporary solution in the form of excel files containing all information for self-creation of these markets. These files can be downloaded after login from the Files section in the ecoQuery (online access to ecoinvent Version 3).

For the future versions of the database we are already developing more permanent solution on how to include these markets directly in the database.

It is up to the user to decide whether he/she would like to replace the UCTE production mix datasets from ecoinvent version 2 in their projects with either the ENTSO-E production mix or market (imports, exports and losses included).
